Subscription Box Hunt--A RBR Experiment

As I am sure I've mentioned in quite a few of my previous posts, I love subscription boxes. I think that they're a great way to get exposure to new companies and brands, it's a great way for new companies to receive exposure and feedback on their products, and it's an affordable way for consumers to find more options for beauty and lifestyle products. I had started on this earlier in the year but I ended up liking Birchbox so much that I stuck with it instead of finishing out my test. LOL The test was to try out different subscription box services throughout the year and see which ones I liked and which ones I did not. So far I have only tried out ipsy and Birchbox; I was going to try out another one but the month I was going to sign up they closed their business down. I forget the name but it ended in 'box.' How helpful, right? I'm sorry. lol

Birchbox and ipsy are both $10 a month for 5-6 samples, which I think is pretty affordable considering that most of the time, you're receiving high-end samples that normally retail for 3x that amount or more. I want to see what else is out there, so I looked on other sites that rounded up a list of different subscription box companies and I picked out a few I want to try within the next 6 months. I had no idea that the world of subscription boxes was so large; there's one of these services for almost everything! Food, pets, DIY, kids, even your man can get involved. I like that there's so much variety in what I can look at so I've decided to resume experimenting and yammering to you all about it once I've tried it. Below are some links to those that I'll probably be trying within the next year or so. I've included links to the subscription pages so you can look at the companies' descriptions as well. I went to Broke Beauty Blogger and Ramblings of a Suburban Mom because they had extensive lists of all kinds of subscription box services so if your tastes are different from mine you should go peruse their lists; they're pretty similar but categorized down the page differently. Just keep in mind that these lists were compiled awhile ago and some of these businesses have since gone dark.

I set my budget at $15; there are a couple on here that are more than that but I consider those to be 'splurge' boxes. lol
1. Madd Cat--This site here (I just betrayed my country roots right there LOL) will send out either full-sized or deluxe sample sized products with every box. The site promises that each user will receive 2 full-size eyeshadows and at least 2 deluxe samples as well as random surprises, like discontinued or overstocked items. I like that concept and I also like that the company is aware that many users of subscription boxes would like to receive more full-sized products with their boxes.

2. Beauty Army--This one is kinda cool in that it begins with a simple quiz to figure out your body type. I believe I went through a similar quiz with ipsy but I still like that we have the option to personalize our options a little bit. This creates a profile and based upon your answers determines what type of samples you'll probably receive. It's very interactive because you get to select your samples, whereas Birchbox and many of the other subscription boxes prefer to surprise us.

3. Beautybox5--This service provides between 4 and 6 samples every month from luxury to well-known brands and can include makeup, skin care, hair products, fragrances and accessories. I think I even saw a mention of some vegan companies being included and I don't think I've ever tried any organic beauty products so that might be interesting.

4. Love with Food--Speaking of organic foods, Love with Food sends eight+ organic/natural snacks or samples every month and an added bonus of purchasing boxes from this company is that boxes are also donated to food banks and related charities like Share Our Strength, which I think is awesome. I also like the idea of being able to try out new foods and snacks.

5. NewBeauty TestTube--This company markets itself as the 'ultimate' program for sample box subscriptions and you pay $30 six times a year. I don't know what exactly is offered in these particular boxes, but I'm imagining that the number of items you receive is probably more than the regular box and that there are probably more full-sized products. It's about $60 more than you'd pay for a $10 subscription over the course of a year, but I would figure that it has to offer more. Is it worth it though? Ehh. I don't know.

6. YokoTea--I like this idea. I'm not really a tea person normally, but one of my business plans involves tea and I'm open to trying new brands. Each month, you get between three and five varieties of tea. In terms of actual cups of tea, the company amounts it to around 30. That's not bad if you're not an everyday tea drinker. The company also says that rare teas will also be included, so that's another plus if you're looking to expand your beverage horizons a little.

7. BuluBox--Now this is interesting. This is a subscription service that focuses on weight loss management and fitness. Each box will include between four and five samples with various health, nutrition and weight loss items. After sampling the products, filling out surveys and subscribing can get you points, which amounts to money that you'll be able to save on regular sized products. I believe this is a normal thing for many subscription box companies though.

8. Treatsie--What I like about this box--besides the fact that it's a subscription box for nothing but snacks--is that you can get a sampler box for $5 to see if you like it before upgrading to the full monthly subscription. That's really interesting; other than Julep, who offers their first month free, I don't know of any other subscription services yet who offer discounted samples of their boxes. If you want to check out the types of things they send out, you can go here to see what's been included in the monthly boxes since June. I took a look at them and I like how strategically they put together their boxes. All of the products per month seem to be in line to form a theme of some kind, which I like. And the treats sound like they'd be fun to try. I'm hungry.

9. Soap-Of-The-Month Club--I love natural and organic soaps. I think they smell fresher, they smell nicer, and they aren't as rough on the skin as regular soaps that have chemicals and other derivatives in them. This club sends out a soap a month. and I've seen natural soaps for about $5 in my local area so this monthly price isn't too bad. I wish it was more than one but that could just be greed. lol

10. Green Grab Bag--Now this one I'm really interested in. I haven't seen any other subscription box service like this before; they offer three types or sizes of boxes. You can get the smallest box for $15, the regular for $25 and the largest box for $35 a month. You get to select a number of products from two columns, which will put you in the corresponding box according to the proper weight, size and type of product. I kinda like that; you can sorta choose by the types of things you order (all organic and vegan stuff, of course) which box you'll get. Nice.

11. Pretty Power Box--Now this one I'm interested in trying out because it's not like any of the other boxes I researched. This subscription box is just for female entrepreneurs, with each box providing office or entrepreneurial items in addition to the health and beauty products, which I think is cool. The company describes this box as being a help for female entrepreneurs so that they can achieve a healthy balance in their lives between work and family, and that's a different focus from many of the other services I've seen. I like that a lot.

12. The All-Natural Face--I like this box because in addition to the monthly contents of the box every month, each user will receive free samples as well. I like this because it seems like they're committed to giving a little more than the normal box and while you really get to try out the larger products you get, you're also exposed to a few more via the free samples. This box service also specializes in natural beauty and skincare products.

13. Sahshe--This company is for women of color (like meself) and different skincare, lifestyle, haircare and cosmetics products that we may be interested in. This service costs $12 a month and 4-5 luxury samples are delivered with each package. It's a little less than some of the other box services offer, but I'm interested to see if the 4-5 items will be worth it.

14. Skoshbox-- My sister would love this box. This is chock full (I really love saying that lol) of Japanese snacks and other goodies that are sent out every month for $12. If you like Japanese treats, you can check out the boxes from August to November here and see if it's up your alley. I think that this is a really neat box to help expand one's pallet.

15. MunchIt--I know I've been focusing on a lot of natural and vegan-based boxes but I think I've found more variety in those and I've also been really intrigued by a lot of them. I like this box because you get to choose from a number of different food mixes, hot and cold tea mixes and even gum flavors. This is a weekly subscription; the only thing I'm unsure of is how many products come in each weekly box.
(Weekly Price: $3.58; monthly price around $16)

16. OneRadiant--I've checked out this site before but I couldn't afford the $36 price tag so I put it on ice. Fortunately, it's not $36 per box, it's $36 for three boxes. The good thing about these boxes is that it is nothing but skincare, personalized to address your individual concerns and help you improve the condition of your skin through the 4-5 monthly samples.

17. Fancy Pants Food--This is pretty much the American equivalent to the Japanese Skoshbox I mentioned above; a box full of different kinds of American snacks that vary from month to month. They've shipped out different kinds of nuts, popcorn, chocolate, fruit caramels and teas, just to name a few.
(Monthly Price: $10)

18. Her Fab Box--I believe this one is also for women of color but it too has something that makes it a little different from some of the other boxes. What makes this different is that it has different sized boxes as well but there are different things offered in each box. The smallest box is called the 2+1=Cute and Edgy Package, costs $10 a month and comes with two pieces of jewelry and a surprise. The Two for Fab, the box I was looking at, costs $15 monthly and includes 6-9 samples of different sizes and a couple pieces of jewelry or accessories. The jewelry differs between boxes which I also like. The largest box is the Fabulous Box One, which includes some full-size products in addition to the regular sample and deluxe sized products. This one costs $25 a month and also includes jewelry and accessories. I'd go with the Two for Fab.

All in all, I'm excited to start on this little experiment. I would like to keep my subscription to Birchbox while I do it so that I could have a small basis for comparison, but I already have two Spotify Premium subscriptions, a Netflix and a Hulu Plus subscription in addition to my other bills so I just can't swing it. One subscription at a time for me. OAN, I'll probably be cancelling the Hulu Plus though; I hardly use it. But that's beside the point. lol Anywho, I'll do a different subscription per month and see how I like it, then come back and review it. At the end of the year, I'll have more than enough products...and "research" (LOL) to see which ones I like the most. I'm easily excitable so this lil' experiment has me really looking forward to January.

Bitchy Fashion Review: Shoedazzle

In addition to my growing addiction to various subscription box services like Birchbox, I have also been looking at other sites like Little Black Bag, Shoedazzle and JustFab. I heard about LBB from a beauty guru on YouTube, I saw a commercial for Shoedazzle on tv and I only knew about JustFab because Kimora Lee Simmons is the Creative Director and I love her to pieces. lol I was on the hunt for some new stuff this summer after I got my last refund from school and I figured I'd treat myself to a new outfit, complete with shoes because I have more shoes that I can't wear (because they're uncomfortable and don't fit) than shoes that I can wear. On the regular, I only wear two pairs of shoes. One pair of Converses and some ballet slippers. Summertime is limited to flip flops and no shoes at all. lol I haven't owned a pair of sandals since my mom bought me jellies as a kid. OAN, who remembers those? LOL

Anyway, I stumbled across Shoedazzle while I was looking for a cute pair of shoes to wear with my dress and being the cheap-o that I am, I zoomed right in on the 'Clearance' category. I have easily given away hours of my life to that site and daydreaming about all the shoes I'd toss in my virtual cart if I had the money. Online shopping is the devil, I tell ya. I can see how so many people end up getting sucked into draining their money shopping online; it's so easy...and almost too tempting...to just click on junk and pretend you can afford it. For me it wouldn't be pretending, it would be straight up lying because I know damn well I can't afford that stuff in mass quantities. lol That's a splurge site for someone on as strict of a budget as I am and that's perfectly fine with me. It makes the purchases I am able to get feel more 'ooh la la how special.'

Anyway, I ended up picking up two pairs of shoes on clearance. This was the first pair.

These are the Crush wedge sneakers by beau+ashe; they originally were retailed at around $60 but were on clearance at Shoedazzle for $15. I really liked the silver velcro strap going across the front of the shoe and the style of leather that they used; it gave me a bit of a throwback feel with the old high-top pump sneakers. I've worn them once so far (I haven't gone many places where I feel comfortable wearing these for extended periods yet) and I'm not really a wedge/boot/heel kind of girl because I'm clumsy as all hell, so they weren't as easy to walk in as I originally anticipated but only because I personally am not comfortable. As weird as I'm sure this sounds, the shoe was just fine. The inside is very soft and comfy. I was only uncomfortable because I wasn't used to it. Many of the users who picked these up and left reviews advised to get one shoe size larger than the regular size because the insides were rather narrow. When I went to order my pair, I saw that the only ones left were one size above my regular so I called it fate. I even refreshed the page to make sure that I wasn't seeing things and when the little black circle saying "Only 1 left!" popped up again, I ordered them with a quickness. $60 dollar shoes...on clearance for $15....one pair left...just one size above mine? Come on now, tell me you can't see how fate intervened for me here!

These are the Padua sandals from Izabella Rue Italy and they originally retailed for $64 but I also got these on clearance for $15. Fortunately it wasn't quite as much of a race to get these as there were still a number of them available, but they were removed from the site not long after I purchased them so I'm glad I got them when I did. I can't find them anywhere else either so again, it's good that I got them when I did. I loved that the sandals were reminiscent of gladiator sandals, didn't appear too fussy and most importantly weren't heels. lol The sole of the shoe is narrow and a little too smooth for comfort, so due to the fact that I am usually barefoot my feet have gotten a little wider than normal so there were a few occasions throughout graduation day where I was walking and my foot just slipped off the side of the shoe. LOL One complaint I had though was that the leather for these shoes was pretty stiff and it got to be a little painful after awhile; after a morning in the sandals I had to take them off because the straps at the top were starting to cut into my ankle. That could be because I haven't broken them in yet, I'm not sure. Sandal season's finally over here in Texas so I won't know until next spring sometime. 

I ordered the shoes at the same time and while the total should have come up to around $124, I only paid $30. The shipping was free as a gift from Shoedazzle for first-time buyers. I immediately received a confirmation email after placing the order, then another when the order was shipped. I didn't have any hidden fees or charges (which I was really afraid of), I didn't have to worry about being signed up for a subscription or running into any sort of recurring fees, and there were no problems with either the condition of the shoes when I received them or the delivery. The only thing I got asked if I wanted to sign up for were emails, which I did end up signing for but it's completely voluntary. In terms of the actual ordering process, I got exactly what I asked for, before the date I was told I'd receive them, and in the end paid less than half of what I should have. A $124 value for only $30?? That was God and excellent timing. LOL

Bitchy Review:

Needless to say, I was immensely pleased with Shoedazzle's service. I have gone back on many occasions to browse since buying my shoes this summer and while I have yet to find any deals quite as enticing as the one I had, the prices aren't all that bad. While I'm more financially challenged than the average Jane now that I'm out of school, I wouldn't mind buying something from the site again. There was nothing misleading during the purchasing process, something that is a large fear for many people when buying online, I received exactly what I wanted and in timely fashion to boot. The quality of both pairs of shoes is excellent and while I usually do not wear sandals or wedge sneakers on the regular, it's only because I'm a klutz. lol I feel like Shoedazzle does a great job of bringing a little sophistication to the average chick by making the prices more affordable for high-end materials and I appreciate that. And they don't just sell shoes, I believe they also sell jewelry and handbags, both of which have a large catalog of high-end, chic looking items. So if you're in the market for one of the three, want to go with a trusted online retailer and don't want to spend your life savings, I highly recommend going with Shoedazzle.

Bitchy TV Review: Witches of East End

My sister and I waited for months before this show finally premiered on Lifetime earlier this fall, and we haven't been disappointed. This show is about a family of witches in the fictional(?) town of East End, with two sisters who recently have come into the knowledge that they are witches and now, with their mother and aunt, still have to deal with regular life and its challenges.....oh yeah, and someone trying to kill them. #newwitchproblems, right? LOL

In the midst of all the other supernaturally-themed trends going on right now (superheroes, werewolves, vampires, zombies--although I guess that's not exactly supernatural but whatever) this show kinda snuck in the back door and I appreciate that it didn't go the route of the categories I listed above. As the vampire craze (which my sister and I were full-heartedly on board with--hello fellow Twihards!!) finally begins to die down and the zombie craze has taken its place (Walking Dead, although too gory for my taste, is the shiz) it was actually pretty nice to see a show that had none of those things. The main characters are below, and I had to include those promo pics because they're freakin' stunning.

Joanna Beauchamp (played by the awesome Julia Ormond) is the matriarch of this family. She is very powerful and unfortunately very cursed as well. Immortality, a quality usually coveted by various supernatural creatures, is actually part of Joanna's curse as it will force her to watch her daughters, Ingrid and Freya, continually be killed young over and over again. Before finishing the grieving process, she spontaneously becomes pregnant and the cycle starts all over again. Due to this curse, Joanna finally has enough and decides not to tell her girls they are witches in order to protect them and give them the chance to finally live full and happy lives as this opportunity was always taken from them in the past. She is a very cautious sort, having been through so much, but this comes to bite her in the ass as she now has an unknown shifter out to destroy her and those she loves. By not telling her daughters of their true identity during this lifetime, she has actually left them more vulnerable as they now have to learn a lot very quickly. Joanna is often the voice of reason, the calm within the storm, during stressful situations. She's very straight-laced and sometimes I find it annoying lol, but I can see why she is the way she is. 

Wendy (played by my newest girlcrush, the stunning Madchen Amick) is Joanna's younger sister and she too is cursed. Their father came to power in their native land and became corrupted, then banished Wendy and Joanna, cursing them in different ways. Wendy's curse was to take on the ability of shifting into a cat (which has benefitted her in more ways than one), however, towards the end of the season we come to find that Wendy is on her ninth and final life. Due to accidentally killing one of her nieces in one of their past lives, she is out of the loop for the next hundred years and suddenly shows up on Joanna's doorstep after being killed, but she comes to find her place within the family very quickly. She's much more mischievous and reckless than Joanna and this gets her in trouble on many occasions. She is irresponsible where Joanna is not, but she is free whereas Joanna is uptight. She balances the family out with both her knowledge and her charm but you can see that she's got her own set of problems. She's probably my favorite of the bunch. 

Ingrid (played by Rachel Boston) is the older of Joanna's daughters and according to Wendy, the most powerful. In addition to being cursed to constantly die and be reborn, not only will she not remember any of her past lives but her and Freya usually end up dying on the same day. Ingrid is a librarian and much like her mother, uptight. She prefers a very safe, quiet existence where she can blend in. However, one of her past lives reveals a time where she was anything but responsible and safe. Ingrid also has a stubborn streak a mile long and is very headstrong, which is actually a good deal of the reason why she ends up in the situations she does throughout the season. The irony with Ingrid is that before discovering she was a witch, she was logical and rational to the level that she did not even believe in coincidences. Becoming a witch challenges all of her previous beliefs, and she has been shown to struggle the most with coming into this new identity and discovering more about herself. She coincidentally is also an expert on matters of witchcraft, having written a dissertation on it and researching it for a number of years. My sister and I are in full agreement that Ingrid is easily our least favorite of the bunch, but I think I love Rachel Boston. lol 

And finally, Freya (played by the gawgeous Jenna Dewan Tatum) is the younger of Joanna's daughters and a close second for my favorite character on the show. We have another day/night situation here as Freya is very passionate, where Ingrid is rather cool (for now). Freya is also very intuitive and thinks with her heart, whereas Ingrid thinks with her mind and doesn't often lose control of herself. Freya is engaged to a hot doctor (Eric Winter) and all seems well, until his younger, smokin' hot brother Killian (Daniel DiTomasso) rolls into town and shakes Freya's world up. With two men vying for her affections and being told one of them is her soulmate while the other is her destroyer, sounds like Freya's got some tough times on the way! An extra piece of drama here is that the boys' mother Penelope (played by Virginia Madsen, an excellent casting decision for this role) has been outed--to the viewers--as the enemy that wants the Beauchamps dead as well as the daughter of a man that Joanna killed (in some twisted stuff, in the lifetime that Wendy accidentally killed Ingrid, she was actually aiming for Ingrid's fiance; Penelope was in the way and in shielding her, Ingrid absorbed the blow and fell off of a balcony to her death) AND the person that stole Freya's powers last week. Busy woman, right? 

Bitchy Review:

I really like this show. As I said earlier, supernaturally themed shows have always had a bit of a place in tv and movies but within the past few years it has really been kicked up a notch, especially in the vampire-zombie-wolf realms. A show about witches hasn't been around since Charmed, which is still on my favorites list today, some 7 years after its finale. People who aren't really aware of the premise of this show tend to compare it to Charmed and while I can see some of the similarities, ultimately Witches of East End is its own show and makes its own impact. The differences between East End and Charmed are very significant in the fact that 1-it's not just about demons; 2-East End's plot and storylines are a little more complex to me, 3-East End is fictional I believe while Charmed is set in the very real city of San Fran, and 4-the Charmed Ones had to stay alive because they were fully mortal, while the East End witches are cursed with a sort of immortality, but this in itself provides a different layer to the drama of the show. 

While the Charmed Ones had an ultimate destiny of protecting mankind and the good in the world, we have yet to see what fate has in store for the East End Witches. The acting by all involved is very solid; I have no complaints with any of the casting which is a rarity for me. The imagery is amazeballs, and the plot has a few smaller storylines that ultimately weave themselves into the overall plot, creating something that is new, fresh and very layered. As this first season comes to a close, not only do I find myself wishing that Lifetime had ordered more than 10 initial episodes, but I'm already anticipating season two. I feel like we're just scratching the surface of everything there is to know about these four ladies and the people surrounding them. I don't see recycled plotlines from other shows, I don't see an overwhelming amount of campyness(sp? idk lol) which is refreshing especially considering this is a show about witches, and I don't see becoming bored with where the various storylines are going. There's too much I don't know yet, and I'm interested in finding out about all of it. If I had to come up with any complaints, I guess I would say that we haven't yet seen more of the girls' previous lives, we haven't seen a little more magic involved, and sometimes an episode can move really slowly. I guess the latter is a good thing though because when the shockers do come up it's like boom!-boom!-boom! LOL Don't judge me, that's the only way I could think of to describe it. 

Other complaints that I have are more character-related....and mostly involving Ingrid or Joanna being uptight lmao....but these are character flaws that hopefully they will work through as we see the show continue. I can say that the stubbornness in these characters is annoying because it is the reason for a lot of the drama on the show because they make things more complicated than they probably should be, but what's a dramatic show without bad decisions, right? In short (you know, other than this novel I just wrote LOL), this show has a lot to offer. It has a lot of layers, all of which have intrigue and are worth exploring, and the actors chosen to carry this out do so with a layer of reality to it to make it believable. I love that this show is carried by women and that even the main villain is a woman and they are all strong enough to carry the weight of this show without resorting to catfights and other foolishness. They cry but they're not weepy women and I appreciate that. I enjoy the actual interactions between characters because it's refreshingly real, with real issues that don't always concern magic or witchcraft and that's also great to see. I hate when supernatural shows forget about human interaction and human problems in lieu of magical problems and situations. I think this show is a good balance; I would actually prefer a little more magic. lol But if you want a break from the other types of shows out today, you want something exciting and sexy to watch on Sundays and are still reading this review (LOL) then I strongly suggest you check out Witches of East End.

This show comes on Lifetime on Sundays at 10pmEST, 7PST but if you want to catch up on the rest of the season before the newest episode on Sunday, you'd better hurry up because there's only one episode left before the season finale! The only place you can find it is on Hulu Plus but it's web-only so no mobile or console watching for this show! I found this out the hard way....twice. I forgot the first time. lol

Bitchy Review: November's Birchbox

I forgot to review last month's Birchbox, but if you give me enough time I'll probably be able to round everything back up and do a good review. I do have this month's though, so without further ado....

1. Color Club Professional Nail Lacquer in Top Shelf

$8 for 0.5oz.

The picture doesn't do the color justice so I'm sorry about that (the lighting in my room isn't the best and I took this with my phone camera so I had to put on the flash), but it's not silver. It is rather metallic, however, but it's more of a frosty tan than silver. I'm still not crazy about it though. I went through my metallic phase awhile ago and I'm just not into it right now (I say this as I sit with silver polish on two of my nails LOL) but I do like the color for a good accent. It's got a solid formula and a pretty sturdy brush; the application was rather even and didn't clump up on the brush. I didn't have to brush too much in order to even out the coats of polish. I've got really small nailbeds so that's a big one for me. lol The polish doesn't take a long time to dry at all even after a couple of coats so that's another plus. The initial coat was a little too light for my taste so the other photo with my thumb lol is two coats. I would have gotten my whole hand but the bottle is pretty small so I couldn't wrap my fingers around the bottle and still get a good picture. The struggles of trying to take your own picture and failing, I guess. LOL


2. Tiossan Body Cream in Terranga, 1/4oz.

$38 for 8oz. 

I tried this body cream on my face last night after I got out of the shower and while I didn't like the smell at first, after I rubbed it in the secondary scents (if that's what they're called lol) changed my mind. That scent was much more favorable to me and remains fragrant for quite some time after applying. There are different scents you can order; the sample that I received was Terranga, which is a combination of mandarin, apricot and rose scents. The cream gave my skin a lot of moisture, which I liked. My skin is usually prone to dryness anyway but during the colder months its worse so the cream was great on my face after the shower. Another good thing about this cream is that it's animal cruelty free, so for those of you who prefer these types of products this one is on the list. It has more of a creamy rather than greasy feel once you rub it in, and the texture is nice as well. It's not watery or too thick, rubs in very quickly, and you don't need a lot to cover one area. I wish the sample size was bigger, only so that I could use it everywhere without using the entire portion at once. lol


3. Vasanti BrightenUp! Enzymatic Face Rejuvenator

$34 for 4.23oz.

I haven't tried this face wash yet so I'll have to update this post when I do. I didn't want to 'one and done' it since the directions instruct you to use it 3-5 times a week, so I'm assuming that it will take multiple applications to receive the intended benefit. This wash is supposed to improve the texture of your skin using a gentle exfoliant and soften it using a combination of aloe and coconut. It smells a bit like a toner to me. I'll try this out for a couple of days and update the post.











4. Pop Beauty Aqua Lacquer in Flowering Fuchsia

$14 for 0.34oz.

I wasn't really looking forward to trying this at first, to be honest. It just looked a little too pink for my complexion and from past experience with lacquers I just found the formula to be a little too heavy on my lips. I was pleasantly surprised, however, when I put this on and it was more of a slightly pigmented gloss instead. Because of the type of applicator this lacquer has, it allows for the color or gloss intensity to be built, and even after a couple of coats the color still isn't too bad. I can also wear this over lipsticks without interfering too much with the color and I like the versatility as well. The applicator was a new one for me; now when you look at the container you're probably expecting the hole applicator, where you have to push the gloss up to the hole, or even the swab-like applicator, but this was more like a stick applicator. I think this style of applicator is what allowed the color and gloss intensity to be buildable. The lacquer was pretty smooth and not sticky on my lips, and I loved the subtle pop of pink on my lips as opposed to the sticky, glittery pink that I was expecting. It did tingle a little after I put it on though; but that could have been just my reaction. All in all, I really like this lacquer.




5. Ahmad Tea London Trio--Raspberry Indulgence, Jasmine Romance & English Tea No. #1

$7 for two boxes, 40 teabags total

With colder temperatures rapidly moving in, I'm finally willing to start moving on to warmer drinks. I usually stay away from them because I have a number of stomach problems so hot drinks tend to upset my tum, but these seem rather gentle so I guess I'll give them a go. The English and Raspberry teas are black teas and the Jasmine is a green tea, but I really like raspberry tea so I'm looking forward to trying it. I've also heard that herbal teas like jasmine are calming so I could try that one night and see if it helps me to get to sleep. I've never had English tea so I'm not sure what to expect there. If I woke up with an English accent though I wouldn't complain. LOL I'll update the post once I've tried one. I'm not too picky about tea; I don't care for extra strong tea, I don't like bitter tea and I don't like heavy teas that leave a film on the tongue. Even when it's hot I prefer a lighter tea that is refreshing, not heavy on the pallet.
UPDATE: I tried the Raspberry last night and OMG I love it! The first thing I noticed was how fragrant the Raspberry smell was and it wasn't like a manufactured smell either; this smells just like raspberries. Even cold the tea isn't too thick and doesn't leave a bad taste in my mouth afterward; it was very light, very fragrant and I loved it.

This was the extra included in this month's box; a gift guide to (you know it) Birchbox products. What I liked about this was that it wasn't just a booklet of random things for you to get, it was categorized. I struggle with finding gifts for the people in my life; I'll find something but be unsure that it fits for them. Now truth be told, I can't afford the full-size product of practically every sample I have ever received from Birchbox. LOL So responsibly speaking, I can't take advantage of the exact offerings in this booklet, but I can find more affordable replacements. They've got categories for the foodie in your life, for the tech groupie, for the cheap-o like myself (a couple of the categories are gifts only under $25), and a number of other categories for the various people in your life. This little booklet is helpful enough to at least point me in the right direction and on an unrelated note, gives me some good color pairings, fashion and hair inspiration for the holidays. And you can't go wrong with that. lol



My Personal Fave:
If I had to name a favorite from this month's box, it would probably be the Tiossan cream, as it is the product I've used the most. It is wonderful after the shower, the secondary scent notes smell amazing and are pretty long-lasting, and most importantly my face does feel worlds smoother afterward. I didn't have a greasy texture to my face after putting it on, it worked well underneath a full face of makeup, and I didn't have to use a lot to cover my entire face. If I could afford the full-size of this product, I would definitely get it. I love it.

The Dud:
I don't think I can find a dud in this month's edition. I haven't tried two of the products yet (the tea and the face wash) but the products I did try were great. If I had to come up with a dud, it would be the price. LOL I have no complaints about the items that I did try; the body cream is amazeballs, the lacquer is a hidden gem and the nail polish is both a color I didn't have before and great with a number of other colors.

Bitchy Review:
November's Birchbox wasn't bad at all. Again, an array of products I had never heard of and the little extra booklet was another diamond in the rough with helping me come up with holiday-appropriate ideas. I didn't come into this with any expectations, so I'm pretty pleased with the products I received this month. As always, I thought the list of products was pretty well-rounded; I got some tea for the chilly weather, stuff for my nails, something for my face and body, and something for my lips as well. Even though when I first started getting Birchbox I was anticipating nothing but beauty products, I actually enjoy the well-roundedness of the products I receive every month. This month's offerings were pretty good. No complaints.

Bitchy Review: May's Birchbox

As I mentioned in my first Birchbox review, I was interested in trying out another month of this service to see if I could definitively recommend it to my friends and family. It was pretty cool because I got it the day after I received this month's ipsy box but I didn't do the review post because I needed some time to try most of the things out. Here's what I got from Birchbox this month:

This was a box of cute little travel and portable-sized products and I noticed that more functional? (I'm not sure if that's the right word, hence the question mark LOL) products were in there as opposed to just makeup. I've tried just about everything, so let's get started!


1. Sumita Color Contrast Eyeliner

The 4-pack of liners like this is $21

I am in LOVE with this eyeliner. I swatched it on my hand before I applied it on my eyes and it was not only dark but very creamy and did not easily wipe off, something I worry about my eyeliner doing when I'm wearing it for a long period of time. It must be well made because it did not crumble, break off or look unsteady. It was extremely soft when I put it on and didn't tug on my eyelid or waterline, I did not have to repeatedly run it across my eyes to get the color I wanted because a couple of good swipes got the exact color and darkness that I wanted, and it stayed put all afternoon & evening. You can buy one full-length pencil from Birchbox for $11, but the link above will take you to a travel-size pack of 4 smaller pencils like the one in the photo since that was the one I received.

2. COOLA Classic SPF30 Cucumber Moisturizer

This is in a super-cute sample/travel size, so it already wins points with me for portability because I can toss it in pretty much any of my smaller purses and keep track of it. The smell is really clean and light, doesn't leave a greasy or oily sheen on my skin like a lot of other sunscreens, and best of all to me doesn't have that thick sunscreeny smell. I usually stay away from sunscreens because they have that really overwhelming scent and tend to just sit on top of my skin, but this one not only has neither of the above, but it moisturizes on top of that and will stay put underneath your makeup instead of giving your face an oily glow and causing everything to slide off your face. As a matter of fact, it served as a decent moisturizer for my face underneath my makeup when I used it yesterday. It goes on really light but had decent coverage; I was out in the sun for hours yesterday and my face didn't feel dry when I came home and I didn't have too much of a tan either. I absolutely love this and can't wait to buy it in the full size.

3. Marvis Toothpaste

The full-size is $10.50

I tried this toothpaste the day I got it mainly because I saw it was imported and I'd never tried imported toothpaste before. LOL. This Italian toothpaste is much different from its American counterparts, but in a good way. Unlike the frothy, thick strips that American toothpastes put out, this is a solid, white toothpaste that doesn't bring about visions of rabies while you're brushing. It literally looks like and has the consistency of a paste. The smell is an extremely strong mint at first, but surprisingly mellow once you brush. I actually got a metallic taste from it, I guess like what the inside of the tube tastes like, and this can take some getting used to. Despite this though, my mouth felt extremely clean and fresh after using it and didn't have that really strong aftertaste that interferes with what I eat or drink afterward. Loved it.

4. amika Obliphica Nourishing Hair Mask

The full-size is $40

This hair mask has Obliphica oil in it, which is said to help repair split ends, make your hair healthier and stronger and restore vibrancy and shine. I need all of the above properties added to my dome, so I was pretty excited to see what it does. It works as a deep conditioner would, leave it in for a few minutes then rinse it out. Firstly, it smells amazing. The lather is very thick and out of that small sample, I was able to get a full usage out of it with some to spare. That could have something to do with the fact that my hair is short but oh well. LOL I left it in for about 5 minutes and after washing it out, my hair was soft and light and I loved it. There are two different sizes of this hair mask available for full-size purchase and I will definitely be picking one of them up. Obviously, I could not see results yet but I can tell that it agrees with my hair, helps to soften it and make it more manageable and with consistent usage will probably do everything it says it will.

5. Runa Guayasa Tea

The full-size box has 16 bags for $7

This tea sampler comes in a box of 4 and is said to help give you the energy of coffee and twice the amount of antioxidants that green tea has. I received the traditional Guayasa, Mint Guayasa, Cinnamon Lemongrass Guayasa, and the Ginger-Citrus Guayasa tea samples. I'm not a big tea drinker and it's getting pretty hot where I live so I'm gravitating toward cooler drinks, but I'll try it tonight and update the post.








Bitchy Review: I didn't think it was possible for me to like this month's samples more than last month's, but Birchbox proved me wrong quite quickly. I like that there were different types of samples instead of just makeup, like the tea and the toothpaste. If you're going somewhere like on a weekend trip, this box of samples could fit in a small overnight bag and you won't need to take much else. I like that there were functional as well as cosmetic samples and of the three I have tried, I wasn't disappointed in the quality and the full-size prices weren't so shabby, either. I have absolutely no complaints about this month's box and can't wait for next month's box to come in.

New Programming Schedule

How've you been enjoying the return of the soaps so far, Soapheads? I have a confession to make: I have yet to watch them. Don't throw tomatoes at me, I can explain! I just haven't been able to watch them on my computer; I'm having a really irritating issue with my laptop where the audio goes out after about 30 seconds and I have to either continuously keep it hooked up with an audio cord or keep muting and unmuting the laptop speakers for the sound to come back. I've tried everything I know how to do and I'm still having the problem, so I usually don't bother watching videos on my laptop anymore. My PS3 only has Hulu Plus and since the soaps are free, I don't see any reason to pay for an app just to watch a free show. The only other option would be to either use my computer tower and plug that into my TV, or plug the laptop into it instead and use the audio cord. Both of these are rather inconvenient to do just to watch the soaps when I've got other things to do on the Internet and so that's left me in a little pickle. But I'll get around to it.

That's not the reason I'm posting today, though. I have to be the bearer of bad news...again...although thankfully it is not as bad as the last time I had to post something negative on here. I'm sure many of you have enjoyed watching your soap the four days a week that it comes on, but Prospect Park has just released a statement announcing that the soaps will each be cut down to just twice a week. The problem came with the fact that people have returned in droves to watch the soaps, but many are only returning to watch one, not both. PP logged that the typical time for fans to watch the soap is usually sometime in the evening, and fans had to dedicate a lot of time to watch these online, so Prospect Park thought it was better to just switch the airing schedule.

The scheduling is now staggered, with AMC on Mondays and Wednesdays and OLTL on Tuesdays and Thursdays and the normal airing of the behind-the-scenes series More on Fridays. This goes into effect on Monday, which is May 20th. Even though PP says this move was prompted by viewer feedback, I do feel like it's an early "one step forward, two steps back" and this concerns me a little bit. If the episodes are already being cut back but the soaps haven't even been back on the air for a month yet, could this mean that despite the various reports, viewership is not as high as PP anticipated?

I'm hearing whisperings now that again, despite the various reports and damage control done by PP to assure us we would not have to pay for the soaps, that eventually both soaps will transition to Hulu Plus (the paid version of Hulu) and we'll have to pay to continue to watch them. What most set me off was that in PP's statement, they kinda sorta alluded to that fact by saying, "....because Hulu agrees with our findings, for the meantime they will keep all of our episodes on Hulu for free to give viewers the opportunity to find us and catch up." For the meantime. If these episodes were going to be free permanently, don't you think past episodes should remain free as well? I think where there's smoke, there may be fire on this one. I don't have Hulu Plus, barely use Hulu and am already paying for a tv subscription service with Netflix. I won't upgrade and have another paid service just to watch the soaps. I understand money has to be made and details like this can't be immediately released or put into effect because people will not be happy and you have to get the viewers back first, but PP specifically said we would not have to pay for our shows. Now they're releasing statements that allude to the very thing they said they would not do. So talk to me Soapheads, if PP ends up transitioning the soaps after a certain period of time to Hulu Plus and making you pay to view, will you upgrade to watch, or will you leave it alone?

Bitchy Review: ipsy's Spring Fling (May) Bag

I'm in the process of narrowing down which beauty subscription services are the best, and since I ordered from Birchbox last month I ordered something from ipsy this month and just received my package today.

I took these out in my backyard. LOL

As with Birchbox, I received 5 sample-size products that I wanted to review below.

1. NuMe Finishing Serum

The full-size product is $29

I didn't try this immediately, but it smelled good when I opened the package. It's a protectant from physical and environmental damage to the hair, seals split ends, and tames flyaways and frizz. I have all of the above, so I'll probably be trying this out this coming weekend in combination with a couple of other hair products I've picked up over the last month or so. I like that it has a dropper applicator and only needs a few drops to work; this size container can be used on shorter locks like mine for awhile and I'll be able to see some consistent results so I can really see if it works or not. Even though the container looks small, 2-3 drops really is not a lot of product so it must go a long way. I'll update once I've used it for awhile and tell you how it goes.


2. Zoya Nail Polish in Piaf

When I first saw this color, I hated it. I love nail polish though, so I had to give it a go and see if maybe it would grow on me over time. It reminds me of Grey Poupon, but eventually it did indeed grow on me. I still don't love the color for myself as I think it gives my cuticles a dried-out appearance because my skin has a yellow undertone, but I'm okay with it. I'm still wearing it, and that says something. LOL It goes on really light at first, a really pale shimmery yellow, but after about 3 coats it darkens to a bit of a Grey Poupon-ish pale yellow or a sandy shade. It maintains a decent amount of shimmer regardless of the coats, so no complaints there. I've never tried Zoya polish before, so I can't say I'm wholly dissatisfied. I like it but I don't love it.


3. Yaby Concealer Flawless Refill in Buff

I almost didn't see this when I was going through the bag it was so small. The business portion of my mind computes that this is technically a sample size and you don't want to give out too much of it because this may hinder sales of the full-size product, but the consumer side is a little disappointed in the size. It feels like a cream-to-powder concealer, which I've been interested in trying, but the shade was off so it made my skin look ashen and dry. It feels rather dry at first as well, so to me you're not able to get a real application in because it dries pretty fast and most women I know apply more than what comes in the sample size. No bueno. I usually use liquid foundation as a concealer because of the coverage but I don't use it all over my face, so I've been looking for a concealer that I can use for my spots of hyperpigmentation. Maybe in another shade I would be okay with it, but this shade was too light so I couldn't get an accurate idea of how it works. What I don't like is that there is no full-size version of this product; you can either buy the entire palette of concealers or continue buying the refill swatches like this.


4. Juice Beauty Reflecting Lip Gloss in Fig

I've heard a lot of raving about Juice Beauty products, so I was excited to see that not only was this a full-size sample, but that it was Juice Beauty. I didn't like the scent at first but now that I've worn it a couple of times it reminds me a bit of fruits, I would say more orange rind. It comes off a little bitter at first. It has a high amount of sparkle, so I can't wear this gloss alone or as a topcoat because it makes my lips look a little white against the rest of my skin, but I like it. And it's organic too, so I know it's safe for my mouth, it hasn't dried out my lips so far and doesn't give me a thick goop-like covering like many lip glosses. The moisture remains on my lips for awhile after applying and I hate having to constantly reapply because my lips are dry when I'm out and about, so this is also a plus. I don't like that ipsy linked me to a gloss 4-pack for the full-size rather than an individual gloss because that seems like a bit much, so I had to look on Juice Beauty's website on my own to find the price for just one gloss.


5. St. Tropez All-Over Glow Body Lotion

This was the final product in this month's bag and is a temporary tanner by St. Tropez. I really don't need any help with tanning or looking darker but I wanted to try it out anyway. I didn't like how it made my skin feel at all. The color (to me) made my skin look more ashy than dewy, my hand felt chalky and my knuckles looked dark and bruised. I don't need anything with a tanning property anyway, but I thought that I would at least have a bit of a glow. It just looked darker and didn't feel too good, either. I'm sure that this probably looks great on lighter skintones, but on mine I just didn't like it. It washes off fairly easy though, so that's a plus. I included pictures of how it worked for me instead of the product picture since I thought that was more relevant and you could see the results beforehand.


6. Bonus Product: Makeup Bag/Clutch

As a bit of a bonus, ipsy included this adorable little clutch with this month's products. It's cute, summery, chevron-printed which I love, but can be used for everyday storage as well. It holds all of my necessities when I leave (iTouch, cell phone, id & debit card, pen and chapstick) so it's big enough to hold the small stuff when you want a no-fuss day and don't want to take a lot of things with you. No complaints here.

Bitchy Review: So what do I have to say about this bag overall? I liked it, but I didn't love it. I have realized that the problem with these subscription services isn't them or their products, it's me. My expectations were a bit too high and rather unrealistic; I guess the hype surrounding these things made me expect something different and when I didn't get it I was disappointed. But in reality, look at what I got for $10--hair serum that's probably going to last me for awhile, a full-sized nail polish that normally costs what I paid for the entire month's subscription, a full-sized organic lip gloss, and a cute bag to boot. I can do without the concealer and the tanning/glow lotion. Four out of six ain't bad. Most of the products had to grow on me, but again that was more due to my expectations being out of whack than the products not being good enough. A plus with ipsy is that discounts of the full-size products are offered if you go through your ipsy subscription to get them. Between Birchbox and ipsy, I've been able to try a lot of high-end products that I would not have had the opportunity to try otherwise and have been able to find things that I will definitely be buying when I have the money to do so. Like Birchbox, I'm willing to give this another go next month.

R.I.P.

Soapheads, I hate to be the bearer of bad news but this morning, Jeanne Cooper (Y&R's Katherine) passed away in her sleep. She was 84. If you've been keeping up with Soapcentral, then I'm sure you heard a little something about the mysterious ailment she had been dealing with over the past month. If you hadn't heard about it, she fell into a coma last month and was in the ICU for a couple of weeks, then released back on April 29th. Unfortunately, a few days later, on May 2nd, she was readmitted and this time would not be released.

Nobody knows yet exactly what illness she was dealing with as her family has chosen not to release those details, and I can respect that. I have watched Jeanne Cooper on Y&R practically from birth and this loss to her family, Y&R and the rest of the soap fans who loved her work hits hard. I am glad she is at peace now and no longer in any pain. I hope that her family finds the strength and the courage that I am sure she passed along to them during this time, and that they look to God for His guidance of their steps. My sincerest condolences are with Jeanne Cooper's family, the cast of Y&R and the lives of all that she touched throughout her career.

I've been hearing about beauty subscription services for awhile now, but I never actually considered signing up for one until a couple of months ago. Many of the subscription companies I'd seen had good offerings, but they were out of my budget. Then I heard about Birchbox off of one of my YouTube subscriptions and kept running across it on other sites so I decided to check it out.  From what I understood, the boxes came with exclusive products and/or samples, were of good quality and only cost $10 a month. It couldn't have come at a better time for me, because I was on the verge of cancelling a subscription I had to a site that coincidentally was the same amount every month. Since I no longer frequent that site, I figured my $10 would be better utilized somewhere else, and again since I hadn't heard anything bad about the samples, the sizes or anything like that (had actually heard the opposite) I said what the hell and gave it a go. 

You have to apply for a subscription, which can take up to three weeks to be approved and then they send your box out immediately afterward; you'll receive it within the business week or at the beginning of the following week. I received mine earlier this week; here is what was in this month's box:

This is Mirenesse's Glossy Kiss lip stain in 2. Flirty Kiss, and I absolutely LOVE this stain. I haven't had much experience with lip stains and had been on the hunt for a good, deep red lipcolor for months. I tried this the day I got it and fell in love immediately. It doesn't wear off within the hour, can last throughout a meal although it does fade slightly, and if you lick your lips the color revitalizes itself a little. I wore it today and didn't have to reapply once, which I loved. I took it with me just in case I did have to reapply, but the fact that I didn't have to definitely gave it some winning points. It's very soft, goes on smoothly, is very vivid and packs a color punch so apply it lightly if you just want a subtle red. If you want that dramatic, eye-popping red, though, this is the product to try. I can't wait to wear this again.

This here is Simple Skincare's Revitalizing Eye Roll-on, and I was kind of excited to see this in the box. It has a very clean scent to it, doesn't have a goopy texture, and has a cool sensation as you roll it on your eyes. I've been seeing various eye roll-ons being used in the different beauty blogs that I'm subscribed to on YouTube and I keep seeing commercials for them, but I'd never used one before. This one's supposed to help with puffiness, soothe the skin and revitalize tired eyes. I don't usually have puffiness, but I do have tired eyes quite frequently and I don't know if it shows, but the skin around my eyes feels tighter and firmer after I use this roll-on. I use it in the morning after applying my foundation and at night as the last step in my skincare treatments. I was exhausted when I woke up this morning for a technology training session due to lack of sleep, so I rolled this on my eyes and I felt the area perk up almost immediately. I love how quickly it works, how my eyes feel after I use this and it smells good to boot.

This is Joie's Folle de Joie eau de parfum sample and OMFG I LOVE how this smells! It smells so clean and light yet so fragrant that I wish I could roll around in a tub of it naked every day. I hate that the sample size is so small and the regular size parfum is so expensive (check the caption on the photo if you want to know the price) but its a very high-quality smelling fragrance and money's gotta be made. This was the perfect size to entice but not so large that no money will be made back from purchases because the sample size was enough. Very smart.

This vial of Nexxus Youth Renewal Rejuvenating Elixir is supposed to help your hair look and feel younger by combating any of the 8 aging signs. I haven't had a chance to try it yet, but I like the concept. I really didn't know about hair and the aging process other than it turning gray, then white LOL, so this was interesting to see. Reading the back, this is the first attempt by Nexxus to restore youth to the hair through a line of haircare products. I'll update this post when I try it and let you know how it makes my hair feel. Now logically speaking, there's not enough in this vial to make a substantial difference in the condition of my hair, but I'll at least be able to see if I like how my hair feels and looks with it.

This is another product I haven't gotten to use yet and I really like how it smells. This is LaFace's PUR Purifying Facial Wash and the container is so small I'm afraid to use it all in one sitting. I guess I'm a cheapette when it comes to samples especially if the product is good; I want to stretch it out for as long as possible. So I haven't used this on my face yet but I touched it when I got it and it was very soft, it kind of reminded me of hotel soap at first. LOL 







Bitchy Review: For my first month of products from Birchbox, I was surprised yet a little disappointed at the same time. For the wait time and the size of the box I was sent, I thought there should have at least been one more product in the package this month. I understand why the samples were so small, but for my first month using this subscription service and all the hype surrounding Birchbox especially, I felt a little underwhelmed when I opened the box. With that said, however, I was exposed to some really great quality products that I would love to purchase full sizes of when I have the money. I'm willing to give this another go next month.
